The Pic Coolidge is in the middle of the Giants of the Ecrins and offers a Panorama on the most impressive walls of the massif. On one side the south face of the Barre des Ecrins, on the other the imposing wall of the north face of the Ailefroides. It is also on the border of the Isère and Hautes Alpes departments. Defeated on July 14, 1877, the adventure to climb it will remain the same as at the time, indeed the ascent from Pré de Madame Carle, going up the Glacier Noir has no ski lift or refuge, it will be a bivouac under the stars which will be on the program.

Itinerary

Day 1

Go to Vallouise to take stock at the backpack, to check the bivouac equipment and the food planned. We take a single car to get to the starting point, Pré de Madame Carle at 1874 m. We go up the entire moraine on the left bank of the Glacier Noir until we reach almost the foot of the south face of the Barre des Écrins. After a short descent we set foot on the Black Glacier, covered with pebbles, it is difficult to imagine that we are on a glacier. We pass the glacial lock and go up all the Black glacier to reach the foothills and Col de la Temple. We reach the Col by the rampant and snow corridors. Night in bivouac on this splendid belvedere.

4 to 6 hours of effort to reach the pass.
